ONSshoebox: Getting Started Guide

> http://www.GenesONS.com > Homepage > ONSshoebox overview

This guide provides a check list of items to be carried out by a new Customer in order to get their new ONSshoebox web site populated and in use by the wider research group as quickly as possible.

Each check list item should ideally be carried out in the order presented, using the detailed information provided through the additional links.

  • Edit your Homepage text:

The default permission for all Wiki pages is that anyone can view a Wiki page whether logged in or not, but only users that are members or with higher permissions can edit pages. There is a default set of text for a new ONSshoebox site, but you should modify the text to be a general introduction to your specific web site and then provide links to further pages as you develop them. Click through to Editing Wiki Pages for a primer on Wiki Page editing and Using the Sandbox shows you how you can practice editing in a safe 'play' environment. Each of your Wiki Pages can also be made more private by Using Permissions to restrict access to Wiki Pages, but you should always leave your Homepage with the normal full access since this is the page that anyone will see whenever they first come to your ONSshoebox site.

  • Update the Homepage images:

The original homepage has two sample images inserted into the page. You don't have to change these of course, but you will no doubt have images that are related to your One Name Study that you would prefer to use. You do not have to do this straight away but when you are ready the first step that you will need to do is to Create Your Image Galleries and Upload Images to your individual galleries. Once you have selected two images that you would like to use then Adding images to Wiki Pages explains how you can quickly update the existing images with those of your own.

  • Add additional Wiki Pages

Starting from the updated Homepage you can now start to build additional Wiki Pages to flesh out the information you want to publish on your web site. Once you have begun to Add new Wiki Pages this can become an organic process that you and the rest of your research group can easily build upon.

  • Adding new Users:

By now you will want to start sharing access to your new web site with other Users in your research group. Your web site has already been set up with a range of user types or User Groups that each have specific permissions. You can now very easily Add a new User and assign each User to a specific User Group.

  • Extending you Image Galleries:

To build upon your initial Image Galleries set up to hold Images inserted into Wiki Pages you can now think about structuring these Galleries to meet your wider needs. Creating Image Gallery structures shows you how to create an overall framework for storing and managing a wide range of image material.

  • Build your File Galleries:

Create Your File Galleries shows you how you can now create individual File Galleries to store and manage a wide range of general files and the Upload Files support material helps you understand the various methods for uploading files from your PC to individual File Galleries.

  • Creating Forums to support your research:

  • Start to develop Articles:
